Courageous Advocacy

Pupils in Oak Class at Eardisley CE Primary School are government advisers!

Under the chairmanship of Dr Roger Morgan OBE (former Children’s Rights Director for England), pupils in Years 5 and 6 discuss and debate wide-ranging government consultations, Bills that are making their way through parliament, and parliamentary inquiries.  Topics have covered new rules for fire safety in buildings, energy saving in new houses, puppy smuggling and caring for the country’s rivers… all topical, all current, and all from a values-base.

When Government ministers and Parliamentary Committees ask the public for views, the children of Eardisley respond and their advice is sometimes written in Hansard!

Their fresh-thinking and well-considered suggestions are the result of the school’s immersion in Christian values such as love, hope, service and responsibility. Pupils develop a deeply held understanding of the language of values and the behaviour that accompanies them. They use critical thinking skills to reason and debate for real improvement for the lives of others.

As a result of this tremendous opportunity, the pupils here are courageous advocates for change. They are becoming our thinking and caring citizens of the world.
